Celebrating Earth Day Responsibly

Next week is Earth Week! That’s right, here at Compost Collective KC we don’t just celebrate for one day, we celebrate the whole week! It is the fifty year anniversary this year, after all. We’ve got all the tools to get you started, and be sure to join us for activities every day next week right here on the blog!

Usually, Earth Day includes lots of outdoor activities like leading neighborhood clean-ups and recycling drives. This year, however, we are still under a stay-at-home order here in Kansas City. But just because we need to stay in doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate our planet!

This year, the theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. Taking action to affect climate change is an important topic, but it’s also a big challenge right now. A lot of actions require large groups of people being in the same space at once, which is something we can’t do right now. However, there are still lots of ways to take action this Earth Day.

Here are some actions to take:

Join the citizen science Earth Challenge 2020 which includes downloading an app and entering climate information for your specific area. This kind of data collection will help answer questions about how the climate is changing as well as promote policy changes for the environment.

Take these quizzes to see what you know already, and what you can find out as a way to learn more about our earth! Get your friends and family involved and see who has the most environmental knowledge.

Start composting with Compost Collective KC. Composting is a great way to help the environment as it decreases food waste entering landfills, which releases methane gases and heats the environment at 21-70x the rate of carbon dioxide. So get everyone you know on board!

Here are some media suggestions ahead of time so you can look for them and have them ready for next week:

Here is our Earth Week schedule:

Monday: Education Day! Find out more about Earth Day, climate change, and fun resources and activities to do for yourself or for the kids in your life.

Tuesday: Craft Day! Make sure you keep your recyclables so you can make new things out of them (hint you might need some plastic bottles).

Wednesday: Go Dark Day! Spend the day without electricity. We will have lots of activities for you to do.

Thursday: Reducing Food Waste Day! Find out tips and get a recipe for an environmentally friendly meal.

Friday: Arbor day! Learn about the trees in our area and ways you can celebrate

Make sure you tag us in your photos of activities through the week! We would love to see how you celebrate!
