If you are joining us for the first time this week, we are celebrating International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW). On Monday we talked about what you can do as an individual to impact the planet by composting. Tuesday we learned exactly how to compost from home, and on Wednesday we learned where your food waste goes once you give it to us to compost! Yesterday we learned about the global impacts of composting all the way down to how it helps us individually. 

Today we are going to bring a little fun to our composting! We’ve got a couple of activities for you to do, if you’d like. The first one doesn’t directly relate to actively composting, but it’s creating your own compostable material! You could try growing your own loofah sponge!

Did you know that the loofah is actually a dried gourd? Well know you do! And you can grow them in your own garden and after you dry them you can use them as your very own compostable sponges. 

If you have kids, here are some great ideas to do with them (or without, no judgement!) including making a “soil-arium” to be able to watch as decomposition happens and your compost forms.
