Every fall, monarch butterflies travel through the Kansas City region on their journey to central Mexico, relying on native flowering plants along the way to fuel one of the world’s most remarkable migrations. Monarch Fest celebrates their journey and the native plants, healthy soil, and people working to protect the habitats that make it possible.
Join us at Urbavore Farm to explore fields of native flowers, shop local makers, learn from farmers and community organizations, and get back to the roots of our connections with each other and the earth.

Danni Parelman of Portal Tattoo will be popping up with a collection of flash tattoos just for Monarch Fest.
Flash designs will be revealed the week leading up to the festival, along with more details! First-come-first-serve, no appointments.

Monarch Fest Merch Design Contest
We’re looking for the official Monarch Fest merch design. Create an original piece inspired by monarch butterflies, native pollinators, healthy soil, regenerative agriculture, and the Kansas City community. The winning design will be featured on official Monarch Fest merchandise and the artist will receive one year of free curbside compost service!
Grand Prize
The winning artist will receive:
- One year of FREE curbside compost collection from Compost Collective KC ($360 value)
- Get free, nutrient-rich finished compost made from your food scraps for your garden, flower beds, or houseplants
- Order local, seasonal food from Urbavore Farm through your CCKC customer portal. Add freshly picked and packed fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, and meat to your weekly or biweekly compost pickup, delivered right to your doorstep.
- Promotion and recognition across our website, tabling events, and social media accounts
- A free official Monarch Fest T-shirt featuring your winning design (of course!)

Submission Guidelines
- Original artwork only
- Suitable for apparel printing
- Single ink color preferred, full color designs will be considered
- Submit a high-resolution file
Contest Terms
- Submissions must be original work. Designs produced using AI will not be considered.
- By submitting a design, the artist grants Compost Collective KC and Monarch Fest permission to use, reproduce, and display their artwork for promotional purposes.
- The artist retains ownership of their original artwork unless otherwise agreed upon.
- Submissions may not violate any copyright, trademark, or other rights belonging to another person or organization.
- Must be located within service area to be eligible for free service. Alternate prizes may be offered at company’s discretion.
